BYE-BYE NO-TEXT NOVEMBER!
Is it true that when you get older, the days seem to go by as if life is being lived on the fast lane? It feels that way to me. I began November with the intention to pick up the phone and call someone voice to voice, rather than text to text. Here are some of the reasons why:
- I thought it would be great to hear a voice other than mine.
- I wanted to challenge others to do the same.
- I wanted to step outside my comfort zone.
So here we are, the last day of November. I accomplished what I set out to do, even in the busiest of days. It was great to have voice-to-voice conversations. You really gain a deeper understanding of others thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The laughs were the best! And you know what? Some calls did not take long, others last nearly 3 hours! I even made lunch plans from one phone call which was a bonus. Thank you, Doris!
To be fair, I did talk to my sister and mother quite a bit. But that is a wonderful outcome. I also received calls from folks who would otherwise have simply texted. I loved it. I sure hope they also reached out to others with a voice-to-voice call. There was a time that phone calls were the only means of contacting folks outside of your home, work, school, or public place.
Way back when, in the home, we had to take turns using the phone. For privacy, I would crawl into a small closet. Now we can use ear buds or headphones. While at work, we would have to have an open extension to make out of office calls. Calls that probably could be tracked on the phone bill too. At school, you would have to ask to go the office to make a phone call and would also have to give a reason. Out in public I remember using a phone booth, do you?
Means of communication has changed, and so has the ability to communicate. It seems unusual that making voice-to-voice phone calls requires stepping outside your comfort zone. But here we are. We’re out of practice, I guess. At least I was. I am glad I made the effort. I had some very meaningful discussions.
Hola December!
Texting is still a great way to communicate. But if you ever feel a disconnect with the world, with your tribe, or simply want to share in laughter with someone when an LOL emoji just will not do, pick up the phone and call someone.
Take good care!
